Roof & Gutters Washing in Long Island, NY

The roofline is where Long Island homes age first: black algae streaks spreading down the shingles, tiger stripes on the gutter faces, and clogs quietly rotting the fascia behind them. Popeye’s Power Washing handles all of it in one visit, with a soft wash that is safe for shingles and a hand-detailed gutter clean inside and out.

Why Do My Roof And Gutters Both Turn Black?

Two different problems that happen to share a color. The dark streaks running down your shingles are Gloeocapsa magma, an airborne algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and spreads a little further every humid summer. The black “tiger stripes” on the gutter faces are oxidation and asphalt runoff electrostatically bonded to the aluminum, closer to a stain than to dirt. Neither one rinses off with water. The algae dies to a soft-wash solution, and the stripes need a dedicated brightening cleaner worked by hand. We bring both to the same visit.

One Visit, Four Jobs

The Whole Roofline System

Your roof edge is a system: shingles shed water into gutters, gutters carry it past the fascia, downspouts move it away from the foundation. We service every link.

Soft Wash Only

Roof Shingles

Low-pressure solution kills algae, moss, and lichen at the root. No pressure blasting, no granule loss, no voided shingle warranty.

Cleared By Hand

Gutter Interiors

Leaves, shingle grit, and seed mats scooped and flushed, with downspouts tested so water actually leaves the roofline.

Brightened

Gutter Exteriors

Tiger stripes and oxidation lifted with a dedicated gutter brightener, worked by hand until the aluminum reads white again.

Detailed

Fascia & Soffits

The trim behind and below the gutters gets washed and inspected, because this is where overflow damage shows first.

Shingle Safety

Soft Wash vs. Pressure On A Roof

There is a right way and a roof-ruining way to clean shingles. The difference is the pressure.

How We Do It

Low-Pressure Soft Wash

A shingle-safe solution goes on at little more than garden-hose pressure, kills the growth at the root, and rinses gently. The manufacturer-recommended method.

Result: streaks gone, granules intact, results that hold 2 to 4 years.

The Damage Method

High-Pressure Blasting

Pressure strips the protective granules that give shingles their lifespan, drives water under the shingle line, and voids most manufacturer warranties.

Result: a clean-looking roof that aged five years in an afternoon.

More Than Cosmetic

What A Clogged Gutter Actually Costs

A clogged gutter never announces itself. It overflows quietly at the back edge, soaking the fascia boards until they rot and the gutter pulls loose. It sheets water down along the foundation, which is where damp basements start. And in January it becomes the anchor for ice dams, the refreezing meltwater that pushes up under shingles and shows up as a ceiling stain in February.

Every one of those repairs costs multiples of a gutter cleaning. Twice a year is the Long Island rhythm: late fall after the oaks and maples finish dropping, and spring to clear the seed pods and pollen mats before summer storms.

The Shaded Side Problem

Why North-Facing Roofs Go First

Walk your street and you will see it: the algae streaks and moss almost always start on the north-facing slope and the sections under tree cover. Those surfaces stay damp longest after rain and dew, and damp plus Long Island humidity is everything Gloeocapsa magma and moss need.

Left alone, the growth does more than look bad. The algae holds moisture against the shingles and darkens the roof so it runs hotter in summer, and moss physically lifts shingle edges as it thickens. A soft wash every 2 to 4 years keeps the growth from ever reaching the moss stage, which is the point where roofs start losing shingles instead of just looking tired.

“Our roof had black streaks for years and the gutters were stained gray. One visit and the whole roofline looks new. Neighbors asked if we replaced the roof.”

Roof & Gutter FAQs

Why do my roof and gutters both turn black?

Two different reasons. The streaks on shingles are Gloeocapsa magma, an algae that feeds on the limestone in asphalt shingles. The tiger stripes on gutter faces are bonded asphalt runoff and oxidation. Algae dies to a soft-wash solution; gutter stripes need a dedicated brightening cleaner. Neither responds to plain water.

Is pressure washing safe for roof shingles?

High pressure is not. It strips the protective granules, shortens shingle life, and can void the manufacturer warranty. Roofs get soft washing only: low pressure and a cleaning solution that kills the growth, followed by a gentle rinse.

How long does a roof soft wash last?

Because the solution kills algae at the root instead of rinsing the surface, results typically hold 2 to 4 years on Long Island. Heavily shaded or tree-covered roofs sit at the shorter end.

How often should gutters be cleaned on Long Island?

Twice a year for most homes: late fall after the oaks and maples finish dropping, and spring to clear seed pods and pollen mats. Homes under heavy tree cover may need a third visit.

What happens if clogged gutters are left alone?

Water overflows the back edge and rots the fascia, spills along the foundation where basements take it in, and in winter feeds the ice dams that push water up under shingles. Gutter cleaning is cheap insurance against all three.

Can you remove moss and lichen from a roof?

Yes. The soft-wash solution kills moss and lichen at the root. Moss releases its grip as it dies and rinses or weathers off over the following weeks, without the shingle damage that scraping or pressure causes.

Do you walk on the roof?

As little as possible. Most soft washing is applied from ladders and roof edges. Staying off the shingles protects both the roof and the crew, and it is one reason soft washing beats scrub-based methods.

Why will a regular house wash not fix my gutter stripes?

Tiger striping is oxidized paint and asphalt residue bonded to the aluminum, closer to a stain than to dirt. It needs a dedicated gutter brightening cleaner applied by hand, which is part of our roofline service and not part of a standard rinse.

Will cleaning help prevent ice dams this winter?

It removes one of the main causes. Ice dams form when meltwater refreezes at a clogged, frozen gutter line. Clear gutters and downspouts let winter melt drain instead of pooling and refreezing at the roof edge.

How much does roof and gutter cleaning cost on Long Island?

It depends on roof size and pitch, gutter footage, and how much growth or clogging there is. Every estimate is free and no-obligation, and combining roof, gutters, and house washing in one visit is the most cost-effective way to book. Call (631) 620-2499.
