A shingle-safe solution goes on at little more than garden-hose pressure, kills the growth at the root, and rinses gently. The manufacturer-recommended method.

Pressure strips the protective granules that give shingles their lifespan, drives water under the shingle line, and voids most manufacturer warranties.

More Than Cosmetic
A clogged gutter never announces itself. It overflows quietly at the back edge, soaking the fascia boards until they rot and the gutter pulls loose. It sheets water down along the foundation, which is where damp basements start. And in January it becomes the anchor for ice dams, the refreezing meltwater that pushes up under shingles and shows up as a ceiling stain in February.

Left alone, the growth does more than look bad. The algae holds moisture against the shingles and darkens the roof so it runs hotter in summer, and moss physically lifts shingle edges as it thickens. A soft wash every 2 to 4 years keeps the growth from ever reaching the moss stage, which is the point where roofs start losing shingles instead of just looking tired.

High pressure is not. It strips the protective granules, shortens shingle life, and can void the manufacturer warranty. Roofs get soft washing only: low pressure and a cleaning solution that kills the growth, followed by a gentle rinse.
